Descriptive info: Home.. Leeds West.. Campaigns.. Biography.. Surgeries.. Resources.. Contact.. Expenses.. Rachel Reeves MP.. Labour Member of Parliament for Leeds West.. Colourful assembly at St Barts.. March 13th, 2013.. On a visit to St.. Bartholomew's primary school Rachel Reeves MP spoke to the children about what it was like being an MP, and was interested to know what pupils would like to change if they were a Member of Parliament for the day.. Many of the issues discussed were about helping people overseas.. One of the pupils wanted to tackle Somalian pirates and many mentioned tackling poverty and building more schools and hospitals in Africa.. Closer to home pupils wanted to introduce a smoking ban.. Rachel said: "It was wonderful to see the pupils thinking about international problems as well as ones in the local community".. Rachel congratulated St Bartholomew's on its outstanding report from Ofsted and the many awards the school has won.. Posted in.. News.. Cost of living survey results just in!.. March 7th, 2013.. Thank you to everyone in Bramley who completed the rising cost of living survey.. The results indicated that people are really worried about rising gas and electricity bills and that people are using their car less and less due to rising fuel prices.. The survey also showed a worrying trend more people are relying on payday loans and are going without insurance for certain items.. Commenting on the results, Rachel said:.. This survey highlights what many of us have been saying for a very long time that this current government is out of touch with the issues that matter to hard working families.. I will be using these results to press the government to change course and to do more to help struggling families with the rising costs of living'.. Heart Unit Judicial Review Decision.. A High Court judge ruled this morning that the decision-making process run by the Safe and Sustainable Review into Children's Heart Services was unlawful.. T.. he following information has been provided by the Save our Surgery Campaign:.. The judge ruled that Safe and Sustainable's decision not to provide further information on the breakdown of Professor Sir Ian Kennedy's assessment panel scoring was a fatal mistake.. She held:.. The assessment of quality undertaken by the expert panel was so significant to the final decision making, fairness did require disclosure of the expert panel s sub scores to enable those participating in the consultation process, including the specialist centres themselves, to provide a meaningful response.. The refusal to provide the sub scores to those who asked for them was ill judged.. The JCPCT failed in its duty to properly scrutinise and assess all relevant evidence before making its decision, given that it also failed to consider the sub scores themselves.. It was not enough to rely upon the expert panel without question, particularly since questions had been raised about the assessment.. If consultation respondents had information about the sub scores, it may have impacted on the final decision to close the Leeds paediatric cardiac surgical unit.. Consequently, failure to provide the sub scores was unlawful.. Tags:.. heart unit.. ,.. save our surgery.. 2000 to be hit by Bedroom Tax in Leeds West.. March 6th, 2013.. Labour Party reveal almost 2,000 hit by Bedroom Tax in Leeds West.. National Housing Federation figures revealed today show 1,861 people in Leeds West will be hit by the government s Bedroom Tax losing on average 728 per year.. The Bedroom Tax will hit 660,000 households, two thirds of them home to someone with a disability at exactly the same time as the government gives a massive 100,000 tax cut to 13,000 millionaires.. Rachel said:.. David Cameron s Bedroom Tax will hammer families in Leeds West already struggling to make ends meet, and could actually risk costing local tax-payers a fortune in higher private rents and covering the cost of driving people out of their homes.. Two thirds of the households hit are home to someone with a disability, and the families of soldiers and foster parents will also be hit.. Yet at the same time prisoners get off and millionaires are getting a massive tax cut.. How can that be right?.. Labour s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Liam Byrne said:.. David Cameron's April tax plan is simply not fair.. From next month, 13,000 millionaires are getting a tax cut worth 100,000 a year on average while over 600,000 armed forces families, disabled people and foster carers have to find 728 a year to pay a new bedroom tax.. Yet the plan is such a shambles that someone  ...   Armley.. After meeting Teacher Vanessa Preston and the students who contacted her, Rachel joined an assembly and took part in a question and answer session.. Rachel was especially interested in debating why it was that young people often don t vote.. One sixth form student explained her theory that many students voted Liberal democrat in the 2010 election and then felt totally let down when the promise over tuition fees was broken.. I was really pleased to learn the students were finding out about the issues of poverty and homelessness in our area, and it was great to join the debate with the upper school and share views and ideas.. I don t believe that young people aren t interested in politics.. It s just up to the politicians to make sure we are talking about the right issues.. In this case, the students were concerned at the levels of homelessness in our city and it s fantastic that they are eager to help through the food bank.. February 2013 Monthly Report.. • Title: Leeds West
Descriptive info: Leeds West, which stretches both North and South of the river Aire, encompasses the four wards of Armley, Kirkstall, Farnley and Wortley, and Bramley and Stanningley.. Rachel has lived in the area since 2006, in the ward of Kirkstall, replacing John Battle as Member of Parliament for Leeds West in 2010.. Over these years, the local area has undergone massive changes.. Coming out of Leeds on the Kirkstall Road, instead of seeing power plant cooling towers to the left, a regenerated area of restaurants and shops surround a cinema complex, with a golf course behind.. A walk along the canal tow-path brings you to a student hall of residence where a brewery used to stand.. Down Leeds and Bradford Road, into Bramley, Intake High School has been replaced by Leeds West Academy, with grand plans to transform the school into one of the leading performing arts colleges in the North, having facilities to match.. Over Hill Top in Armley, Swallow Hill Community College is another product of recent investment in our children s education.. John has achieved a great deal for the people of Leeds West and still continues to be active in the community he knows and loves!.. Things to Do in Leeds West.. Leeds West is home to some great attractions and leisure facilities, some excellent pubs and restaurants, and it is surprising just how much is going on across the constituency.. If you are new to the area, or just want to try something new, here are some great places to go and things to do:.. Local History.. Leeds has grown from its Early Medieval origins as a collection of villages into the great modern city it is today.. However, the different wards across the constituency still retain their own character and community spirit, reflecting their village roots.. North of the river, the Kirkstall Abbey and the Forge, about a mile up river, form the historic backdrop  ...   by Newlay Bridge is one of Rachel s favourites, with live music and pub quizzes throughout the week, and the West End on Abbey Road always has a good range.. Annual Events.. As well as all these places that are on the doorstep every day, annual festivals brighten up the year as well! From Bramley Carnival and Kirkstall Festival in the summer, to the Armley Moor Fun Day and wrapping up warm for Bramley Bonfire in Autumn, to carol services in the deep of winter, there s always plenty going on.. The organizers of the I love West Leeds Festival do a great job, and you can find out all sorts about their latest plans year at.. ilovewestleeds.. co.. uk.. Leisure Centres.. For those interested in leisure and fitness, Leeds West offers a number of first-class facilities to the local community, including Armley Leisure Centre, the historic Bramley Baths, and Kirkstall Leisure Centre.. There are loads of gyms, sports clubs and activities all over the constituency, so there are plenty of places to keep busy!.. Open Spaces.. It s surprising just how much green space there is in Leeds West.. From the rural fringes of New Farnley to Bramley Fall woods, you can get away from it all without having to travel far.. Kirkstall Abbey is a spectacular thing to have on your doorstep, while the canal offers a brilliant route into the city centre by bike.. >.. John Battle.. Leeds West was represented in Parliament by John Battle MP for 23 years, between 1987 and 2010.. John decided to stand down at the last election, after a long and successful career.. In his time as MP for Leeds West he assisted the Labour party in reaching many national achievements while continuously fighting for the good of the constituency and city as a whole.. After 2 years of campaigning Hawksworth Wood Post Office finally re-opened its doors today, at its original site, and will be open 6 days a week!.. Rachel attended the opening with Kirkstall councillors Bernard Atha, John Illingworth and Lucinda Yeadon and delighted local residents.. The Post Office was closed in August 2010, prompting a strong campaign from Rachel, local councillors and residents.. A mobile Post Office van was secured in late 2011 to maintain services but Rachel vowed to continue campaigning until a permanent solution was found.. Rachel said,.. 'I am delighted that we now have a permanent Post Office back in Hawksworth Wood and I hope that residents will begin to use this service regularly again to ensure its continued existence'.. Disbelief over 'fire hazard' pot plants in high rise flats.. August 15th, 2012.. As reported in.. The Sun.. Yorkshire Evening Post.. and on.. BBC Look North.. yesterday Rachel has expressed outrage that residents of high rise flats in Leeds West have been asked to remove items such as doormats and pot plants from communal areas as these items are deemed to be a 'fire hazard' by West North West Homes.. Rachel has branded the policy ridiculous and accused West North West Homes of penalising tenants who are taking pride in their homes and trying to make the flats a more attractive place to live.. She commented,.. I find it preposterous that West North West Homes are asking tenants to remove items such as doormats and pot plants from outside their doors while they review their policy.. I am currently in the process of conducting a survey into living conditions in high-rise flats, following a sharp increase in constituents contacting me regarding poor conditions in the blocks, and the results so far have shown that there are serious problems with issues such as anti-social behaviour, cleanliness, human and dog waste, rubbish, broken lifts and entry doors and tenants breaching their tenancy agreements.. I would rather see West North  ...   not asking that residents dispose of the item as we are working to look at the practicalities of implementing a Managed Policy.. The Sterile Policy means that communal areas such as entrance foyer, landings, drying areas and stairwells should be used for means of escape and should not be obstructed.. Additionally, combustible items such as furniture, pictures, net curtains, plants and artificial flowers, show not be used or displayed in any communal areas, as they may fuel a fire or cause an obstruction in the event of fire.. As a result, we are writing to all residents to request the removal of items from all communal area, to help maintain a safe living environment.. Councillor Peter Gruen, Leeds City Council's deputy leader, said he was calling for a full review into protocol on introducing new systems as no consultation took place before the letters were issued to residents.. * You can read more about Rachel's survey into the conditions of high-rise flats by clicking here.. Bus Quality Contracts Scheme Approved.. June 29th, 2012.. The decision has been made today, at the West Yorkshire Transport Authority Annual General Meeting, to approve the introduction of the Bus Quality Contract Scheme.. The Scheme is heralded as the best way to provide significant benefits for bus users including integrated ticketing, higher service standards, a more stable network and pricing structure and more local accountability for service standards.. Supporters have said the scheme will bring simpler fares and fewer timetable changes.. The decision will give Metro responsibility for routes and fares, which have previously been in the hands of private bus operators.. The scheme will be the first of its kind in the country.. Metro Chairman Councillor James Lewis recently said,.. When any of my ITA colleagues and I attend a public meeting on transport it is clear that people across West Yorkshire are not happy with some bus services and this has been reflected by a steady drop in passenger numbers over the past 10 to 15 years,.. Because councillors are listening to what the public are telling them, Metro s work towards the Quality Contract framework has at each stage received cross-party backing on the ITA.. As news of the decision broke Rachel, a supporter of Quality Contracts, took to.. to comment,.. Fantastic that WY Metro have decided to introduce Quality Contract 4 #buses in Leeds and WY.. • Title: Expenses
Descriptive info: My pledge and commitment to public disclosure.. The Expenses scandal caused enormous damage to the reputation of politicians.. I believe current MPs must strive to restore trust in Parliament and our democracy.. This includes being open and honest about my expenses and the reasons for claiming them.. So I am pleased that IPSA (the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority) will be publishing details of all MPs expenses every two months on their website.. I fully support this openness and transparency and the opportunity it gives constituents to have access to the details of how I spend public funds.. Visit.. http://www.. parliamentary-standards.. org.. uk/.. to access the published expenses claims as published by IPSA.. Since the General Election in 2010 IPSA.. ipsa-home.. has the responsibility for setting the rules and administering the allowances associated with the work of MPs including the payment of MPs and staff salaries.. IPSA is entirely independent of Parliament, Government and all political parties.. My arrangements and allowances as MP for Leeds West.. MPs have expenses and allowances to enable them do their job.. Before any claim is paid, they must have an invoice or receipt, and it is thoroughly checked by IPSA.. I always apply the principle of best value to all decisions I  ...   staffed five days a week, with a short shutdown between Christmas and New Year.. Through IPSA I claim expenses to pay for the running of my office.. The expenses pay for the office rent, for service charges, business rates, utilities (gas, electricity and water), telephone and broadband rental and call costs, insurance, and room hire for surgeries etc.. They also pay suppliers and shops for things like furniture, stationery, paper, printer toners, office equipment, cleaning and cleaning materials.. In short, they pay for the things that allow me to run an effective office.. My staff.. My staff team comprises 5 people, three full time and two part time.. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) has approved the job descriptions and contractual arrangements of all members of my staff.. All staff are paid salaries within the IPSA recommended salary bands according to their job role, qualifications and experience.. My travel.. My rail travel is predominantly between Leeds and Westminster, whilst my car mileage claims relate to my work within the constituency and very occasionally a Leeds to Westminster journey.. My accommodation.. I own a house in London with my husband and claim rent for a house in Bramley where I live in the constituency.. b2evolution skin.. blog soft..
