  • Title: Left Hand Drive Cars - Lhd 4x4 - News - Audi Q5
Descriptive info: Audi Q5.. 18 August 2008.. Car Reviews.. Top Gear.. Audi's sub-suv drives well, has a great interior and a good range of engines, says tom ford.. but it's not sporty or exciting, despite the blurb.. If I hear the word 'sporty' or 'performance' taken in vain yet again in the next 30 seconds, I'm going to lash out and start kicking chairs over.. Not everything in the universe has to be 'sporty' or 'performance' to give it credibility.. Not being sporty is, in fact, perfectly acceptable.. I don't need performance-orientated underpants, or a sporty door handle, and both are things that I personally could live without.. So why is Audi launching a small 'performance' SUV that it is touting as the 'sports car in the SUV category' without any sense of irony? It does not compute.. Though it possibly has something to do with the same marketing team that came up with the assertion that the Q5 is 'small', when all things are relative and the Q5 is only actually small when compared to big-brother Q7, which has its own gravity well.. Still, if you take a gander at the ever-increasing strata of sub full-size SUVs/SAVs (or whatever sub-category the men in suits have casually rolled out this week), you'll see that the Q5 is aiming squarely for the top end of the market, and making no apologies for it.. So you can forget realistic group tests with the Nissan X-Trails of the world; the Q5 starts at 30k and continues ever upwards into the fiscal realms of some very competent machinery.. It had better be something special.. The bare-paper stuff certainly reads like Audi isn't skimping on the smaller of its two-model SUV range.. The Q5 will be launchedin the UK with a rebuilt-from-the-ground-up 211bhp 2.. 0TFSI four-cylinder petrol, now with variable valve lift, and a pair of diesels, the 170bhp, 2.. 0-litre TDi four and the 240bhp, 3.. 0-litre TDi V6.. The small four-pot diesel gets a six-speed manual transmission, while the two others benefit from next-generation 'S-Tronic' double-clutchery, now with seven speeds.. The drivetrain is quattro across the range and uses a 40/60 front/rear bias in normal driving conditions to give 'sporty handling and a rear-driven emphasis'.. Hmm.. Should things get tricky, 65 per cent of the available torque can be shoved through the front wheels, or 85 per cent through the rears, and there's a hill-descent control for light off-road, and some clever ESP programming that can alter various parameters depending on what surface you're on (mud/sand/rubble), or even sense if you've got a heavy load on the roof rails.. But even though the new Q5 will be offered with several off-roady options, Audi is more or less convinced that most won't see dirt unless one has to swerve around a poor person.. There's an option called 'Audi drive select' that has the usual settings (comfort, auto and dynamic) that affect the usual parameters (steering, throttle map, gearbox actuation).. That tells you more or less all you need to know - this car is set up for road-going adjustability rather than off-road unstoppability.. It works, though..  ...   full-colour screen are really very well animated, and the satnav now maps in 'proper' 3D, with landmarks drawn like a computer game.. Seriously, you can count the windows in the Houses of Parliament.. Theres also the usual iPod/mp3-player docks, and a card-reader in the dash, as well as a DVD-capable screen that's standard you won't get a big screen-shaped hole in any cheaper variant.. The dials and general ergonomics are spot-on, and there's that nicely weighted feel and tactility that is generally referred to as 'premium'.. Basically, it all works like you think it should; nothing snaps off and someone thought to damp things you touch, or cover them in expensive-feeling materials.. Underneath, it could be made of Play-Doh, but the interior tells you it's not, so you believe that all the bits you can't see are as sorted.. Even the general size feels about right, and the ride height feels high enough to be interesting and advantageous, but low enough not to feel like you're helming a cruise liner from the poop deck.. It even punts along with a surprising turn of speed and fluidity.. The smaller engines make the best fist of the Q5 - if you're going to go for a big engine, you might as well have the Q7 and add the space.. Indeed, according to Audi, the 2.. 0-TDi will make up 77 per cent of all Q5 orders in the UK.. Which is no bad thing really.. Every model is certainly more accomplished than a Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE, though the Landy would eat the Q5 for breakfast off-road, confirming the disconcerting feeling that this really is a baby Q7.. So that means well-sorted, but heavy-feeling in the lower third, the car equivalent of a Weeble, or one of those lifeboats that self-right.. The only problem I can see is that where the Q7 makes a huge statement by virtue of being, well, huge, the Q5 isn't actually all that striking.. It's handsome enough, and dressed in the optional 20-inch rims, or the inevitable S-Line sports kit, it looks perfectly acceptable, but it doesn't quite have the impact of its big brother or the delicacy of something noticeably smaller.. There's an appeal here, though, Audi giving customers even less reason to devolve themselves away from the brand into something that suits their more specific niche requirements.. It's a good, if slightly predictable response to the small premium SUV market.. It hasn't got any major bugbears, but similarly, it won't light too many fires.. It's one of Audi's solid-but-strangely-unremarkable products, the ones where it becomes increasingly difficult to pick fault, but there's a defined lack of character to fill in the gaps.. Audi probably knows that, hence the predilection for exciting words in all the press material.. Somehow I think that Audi doth protest a little too much.. Good car, but don't believe the hype.. • Title: Left Hand Drive Cars - Lhd 4x4 - News - Ford Kuga
Descriptive info: Ford Kuga.. 16 June 2008.. Rating: 5 Stars.. On the road price:.. 20,500 - 22,500.. For.. :.. Impressive handling, low emissions, fine interior.. Against.. Rear could be more flexible, not the roomiest for passengers.. Driving.. The Kuga is derived from the fantastic Focus, so it is no surprise to find it strikes a good balance between handling and comfort.. It is accurate and grippy through corners, and the steering offers you a choice of assistance weights.. There seems to be little difference though all three are precise and communicative.. Just a single engine is offered for now, the 2.. 0-litre TDCi Duratorq diesel.. This is a unit we have always rated highly, and it s as impressive as ever here, with a responsive and smooth nature.. A 2.. 5-litre five-cylinder turbo petrol, as seen in the Focus ST, is also scheduled for the Kuga, too.. The position of the engine stop-start button is odd, though it sits between the two main air vents.. Marketplace.. The Kuga is Ford s first genuine entry into the compact SUV class.. It competes with the likes of the Honda CR-V  ...   premium product.. It is also very well equipped, in both Zetec and Titanium trim.. Owning.. The Kuga s premium look is reflected once you re behind the wheel.. Ford has really upped its game in terms of interior quality, and this shows in the Kuga.. The layout is simple but stylish, yet in spite of the abundance of black trim, it isn t gloomy.. The driving position is spot-on and all-round visibility is good, too, even if the thick C-pillars make parking tricky.. In the back it feels very similar to a Focus, although the Ford isn t quite as spacious as the class-best.. Folding down the rear seat demands the seat bases to be flopped up, and the sliding bench has a somewhat restricted range.. But the boot itself, accessed through a handy split tailgate, is a decent 410 litres, and there s extra storage under the load floor.. Fuel economy isn t bad either, and the CO2 figure of 169g/km is, for an SUV, fantastic.. What s more, 12,500-mile service intervals will be well serviced by a huge dealer network, which charges competitive rates..

  • Title: Left Hand Drive Cars - Lhd 4x4 - News - Golf BlueMotion
Descriptive info: Golf BlueMotion.. 08 September 2008.. New Golf BlueMotion.. Volkswagen has unveiled the Golf BlueMotion concept, which emits only 99g/km of CO2 meaning buyers won t have to pay a penny in annual road tax in the UK! (nice).. Under the current UK road excise duty system, the Golf BlueMotion falls just 1g/km shy of the 100g/km limit for band A but that will still save owners the 35 per year demanded for cars in higher band B.. The hatchback emits exactly the same amount of CO2 as the smaller Polo BlueMotion and beats the current MkV Golf Bluemotion s emission count by 20g/km, as  ...   compared to the equivalent Golf V s 62.. 8mpg figure thanks to an ultra efficient 1.. 6-litre TDI engine that develops 104bhp and 249Nm of torque, allowing the green machine to despatch the 0-62mph sprint in 11.. 2 seconds.. Officially a concept at present, the Golf Bluemotion achieves its miserly fuel consumption and emissions figures by way of improved aerodynamics, a five-speed gearbox with revised ratios, and alloys shod in low rolling resistance rubber.. A diesel particulate filter is also fitted to reduce nitrous oxide emissions.. The MkVI Golf is set to hit showrooms in January, with this BlueMotion version expected to follow mid-2009..

  • Title: Left Hand Drive Cars - Lhd 4x4 - News - Special Cay
Descriptive info: Special Cay.. 12 August 2008.. Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking (no really its his name) has confirmed that next years Cayenne will be installed with a three-litre V6 diesel developing 237bhp and 406lb ft of torque.. If the lump sounds familiar, that s because the oil-burner will be transplanted near-unchanged from the Audi Q7 - all part of the Posche/VAG group not-always-so-friendly partnership.. The turbodiesel will haul the Q7 to 60mph in  ...   the Cayenne.. Rather than investing in a new, expensive diesel engine, Porsche has instead ploughed its cash into developing a hybrid system, which should make its way into the Cayenne some time in 2010.. And if you re getting a bit rattled about the whole idea of a diesel Porsche, just a thought: it could have been the five-litre V10 turbodiesel straight out the Touareg.. All things considered, probably a good move..

The first pictures of the all-new Ford Ka have just been released and it s sure to shake up the booming city car sector when it hits UK showrooms in January.. Due to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October, the newcomer has a tough act to follow.. The original Ka, now in its 12th year, has cemented itself as a modern classic.. So it needs to be good and just on looks its off to a flying start! Ford's smallest car is based on the impressive new Fiat 500.. Add to that the team of engineers behind the sublime handling of the Focus, and all the ingredients are in place  ...   ergonomics.. There are obvious styling nods to the imminent Fiesta, too, including raked headlights and a bold crease rising towards the tail lamps.. Inside, the dash takes inspiration from the Fiesta, too, flowing down into a sweeping centre console that incorporates the gearlever.. High-spec models will get levels of kit previously unseen on cars in this class.. Engineers have worked hard to ensure the Ka s ergonomics are class leading, so all the major controls are set high, close to the height and reach-adjustable wheel.. Descriptive info: Super Bug.. 04 August 2008.. Good car, the Bugatti Veyron.. Not too shabby.. Only problem is, it's a bit common nowadays, isn't it? You can't head past a supermarket car park or evil millionaire megalomaniac's secret headquarters without seeing a Bug parked out the front.. What you need for real exclusivity is one of these: the Grand Sport.. Or the targa Veyron, if you prefer: either way, it might just be the most extreme convertible the world has ever seen.. Or ever will see.. Yes, the Veyron has lost its top.. The Grand Sport retains the Veyron's faintly absurd eight-litre, twin-turbo W16 engine, but dispenses of the fixed roof in favour of a clear, removable hard-top panel.. We don't know too much about how Bugatti  ...   Sport's, erm, unique aerodynamic challenges.. The aerodynamic challenges of keeping 987bhp on the road, and the driver's and passenger's heads on their bodies.. Aside from that - and new daytime LED running lights, which you'll have spotted, obviously - it all looks stock Veyron: hardly a bad thing.. No word on price or production run yet, but we'll find out more when the Grand Sport is formally unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concourse d'Elegance later this month.. If that removable hard top has got you worrying about getting caught out in the rain with no protection, fear not: After some complex calculations the boffins have proved that the Veyron is actually quick enough to outrun gravity.. You'll be lovely and dry.. And penniless.. But dry..

Descriptive info: Fiesta Zetec S.. 11 July 2008.. Not even on the UK roads yet, but Ford is already chasing down the warm hatch pack with the new Fiesta Zetec S.. The Zetec S will sit on top of the new Fiesta range when the car is launched in the October, keeping the throne warm until the true king arrives the fall fat Fiesta ST.. But the pretender will not be short on thrills, thanks to an all-new 118bhp 1.. 6-litre Duratec petrol engine.. Designed to deliver a great mix of performance and economy, 0-62mph is dealt with in 9.. 9 seconds, CO2 emissions are a scant 139g/km and  ...   siblings, but the Zetec S will stand out from the hatchback crowd thanks to a dynamic body kit, including deeply-sculpted flanks, jagged side skirts and an aerodynamic splitter.. Both handling and safety will benefit from improved torsional rigidity over the last car all new Fiestas will be ten per cent stiffer than their predecessors.. 55 per cent of the body structure will be fabricated from high-strength steel, so the Fiesta will be less prone to body roll and much more resilient to impact.. The new Fiesta will be officially unveiled at this month s UK motor show, so if you get a chance go and check it out..

  • Title: Left Hand Drive Cars - Lhd 4x4 - News - Insignia duo coming soon
Descriptive info: Insignia duo coming soon.. 08 July 2008.. It has been revealed in the motoring press the Luton based firm Vauxhall will showcase both four-door saloon and five-door hatchback versions of the new Insignia for the first time at the upcoming British International Motor Show.. Both models have been styled elegantly and boast a flowing, muscular design.. They have deliberately been produced in similar styles to retain the attraction of Vauxhall s latest mid-sized car.. Vauxhall have commented that offering hatchback, as well as saloon derivatives, from the start is particularly important for the UK, where five-door cars traditionally enjoy a high market share of the mid-size class segment.. The fuel consumption, emissions and driving dynamics of both cars will  ...   standards and come coupled with six-speed transmissions.. The three petrol engines range from a four-cylinder 135 bhp unit to a V6 with 255 bhp.. Two new 2.. 0-litre direct-injection turbo-diesels exclusively developed for the Insignia have power outputs spanning from 125 bhp to 155 bhp.. And for the first time the newly developed chassis will be able to be enhanced, a result of the innovative FlexRide system, which will ensure fast, efficient and equal distribution of torque over the four wheels leading to improved stability and traction and therefore performance.. It has also been revealed both models will be realesed first in left hand drive in Europe (Opel) then reaching UK (Vauxhall) showrooms by the end of the year..

  • Title: Left Hand Drive Cars - Lhd 4x4 - News - Focus RS up close
Descriptive info: Focus RS up close.. 04 July 2008.. The waiting is finally over! Ford has unleashed its spectacular new Focus RS and here are the first official pictures.. These images, taken earlier this month in a top secret studio, show what drivers can expect from the newcomer due to on sale early next year priced from 25,000.. For performance road car enthusiasts, the new model will mark a welcome return for the Ford RS badge.. This will be the second Focus model to carry the RS mantle and promises another exciting chapter in an exciting 40-year story that began in Germany in the late 1960s and gained momentum across Europe with the launch of the 1970 Escort RS1600.. But while the exterior styling is getting fast Ford fans excited, its what is under the bonnet that s creating almost as much of a stir among performance car afficionadoes.. Developing an incredible 296bhp, the car will be the most powerful road going RS Ford has ever built.. Powered by a highly tuned 2.. 5-litre five-cylinder engine, Blue Oval engineers promise that the new RS will be capable of sprinting from 0-60mph in less than six seconds.. Top speed will be 155mph.. What s even more amazing is that all of this performance will be available from a car that is front wheel drive.. Ford decided to abandon plans for a 4x4 evolution of its performance flagship on the basis the system would add too much cost and weight to the basic Focus.. As a result the newcomer gets a special Quaif developed limited slip differential and an uprated six speed manual gearbox.. Jost Capito, Ford of Europe s Vehicle Line Director for Performance Vehicles led the development of the car.. We want the new Focus RS to be a serious high performance car as much a car for driving enthusiasts as the one before it and classic Ford RS models of the past.. he said We re staying true to the core RS principles of an exciting, yet affordable performance road car you can live with every day.. The vehicle is finished in a special bright green paint with inlaid metallic flake, a striking, modern interpretation of the 1970s Le Mans Green of the Escort RS1600 era.. There are also wider wheel arches and a wider track, plus triangular, RS-badged vents on the flanks.. Two classic-style bonnet louvres are both a styling hint at the power beneath and a practical requirement, maintaining correct system temperatures.. The completely new front bumper design for Focus RS incorporates a deep front airdam with a large, mesh lower grille.. Stylish and practical, this prominent feature represents the latest Ford 'kinetic design' face and is finished in piano black.. Above, chromed xenon headlamps stand out like cat s eyes and are framed by matt-black housings with unique additional vents running underneath.. Above, a unique, twin-element, black RS rear spoiler sits at the Focus RS roofline, echoing both RS models of the past and the World Rally-winning Focus WRC that has been  ...   the Focus ST, including turbo pressure, sitting atop the centre console and angled toward the driver s eyeline.. At the heart of the all-new Focus RS is a specially developed, turbocharged version of the Duratec 2.. 5-litre 5-cylinder engine.. Significantly revised for high performance, this powerplant is targeting an impressive power output of 300PS and over 410Nm of torque, contributing to an excellent power-to-weight ratio.. Such significant increases are not simply the result of altering engine management or boost pressure: starting with the Duratec 2.. 5-litre block, Ford RS engineers developed unique camshafts, a revised cylinder head and gasket and revised intake and manifold system for the car.. Although the car is still in development, prior to its launch in early 2009, early performance testing indicates a 0-100km/h (0-62mph) time of under six seconds.. Throughout Focus RS development, Capito and his team have been keeping a sharp focus on creating a car that delivers excellent performance and traction.. Various innovations, developed as a result of customer feedback from previous performance Fords, have allowed engineers to keep the new Focus RS as front-wheel drive, with a limited-slip differential, while still achieving demanding targets for traction, handling and steering.. The new Ford Focus RS is equipped with an innovative front suspension system known as a RevoKnuckle , which is designed to reduce unwanted steering disturbance and torque steer, the impact of torque on steering in front-wheel driven vehicles.. Torque steer occurs during hard acceleration, cornering or driving on uneven surfaces, when torque on the driven wheels exceeds grips levels.. It is characterised by sudden turning force on the steering wheel and can be exacerbated by vehicles with wide tyres and limited-slip differentials.. In Focus RS, the RevoKnuckle works in conjunction with a Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing limited-slip differential.. Ford Team RS engineers have worked closely with Ford's Advanced Research Centre in Aachen, Germany to develop the RevoKnuckle technology specifically for the high performance Focus RS.. It allows the simplicity of a traditional McPherson strut arrangement, but with geometry settings that minimize steering disturbances and torque steer, principally a reduction in steering offset.. The Ford Focus is an excellent base for a high performance car agile, responsive and stable, explained Capito.. We studied at length how best to enhance these qualities for a high performance model.. Our work has shown clearly that our approach in combining a tuned RevoKnuckle with the Quaife differential is an ideal solution for a high performance front-wheel-drive road car like Focus RS.. As you would expect, we gave all-wheel-drive careful consideration, but by combining and tuning these elements and learning from Ford s expertise in industry-leading handling, we have managed to eliminate the weight of AWD from the car and still have been able to target a class-leading balance of traction, handling and performance.. The result is a lightweight set-up, that will deliver the right blend of traction and razor sharp controllability in a way no one would have expected from front-wheel-drive, and we believe we have made the right choice, Capito concluded..
