  • Title: La Charrue: Accommodation - Bed & Breakfast - Chambre d'hôte - Autignac, France
Descriptive info: About your hosts.. We are Jane and Ron Bennett (ex banker and medical receptionist) formerly from Gloucester and previously N.. Wales and Shropshire.. My husband is a keen birdwatcher and has enjoyed developing a database of birds of the Autignac area and I love to play with decorating, soft furnishings and in the kitchen! We have a daughter, Laura currently living in Leeds, also, a very friendly lurcher dog, Cleo, who accompanied us here.. It had long been a pipe dream of ours (following numerous family holidays) to retire in France.. In May 2000 we decided to explore various regions of the country, ending our holiday in the south west, an area, with which, we both fell in love.. During August 2000 for many reasons, notwithstanding a particularly grey British summer(!) our minds were made up; we decided to “go for it” and seek retirement in France, viewing, in one week, 36 properties.. On our return to Gloucester, we concurred that the view had it together with proximity to coast, mountains etc.. , plus located in a very tranquil typical French village.. La Charrue (the plough; we found one in the garden), and Autignac were to be our future, and our piece of paradise.. Sounds simple? It wasn’t! Various problems both sides of the channel and to cut a very long story short we left Gloucester on 11th Oct 2000 in torrential rain, arriving here on 13th Oct – the same weather had followed us throughout France and to our new location, all in all, what had we done ??!!!.. Many trials and tribulations later, for example, imagine purchasing fridge, cooker and dishwasher, not to mention a car ! with very limited language skills and a giant sized dictionary! However, we are now firmly ensconced in our new life with many native friends, still battling to  ...   sad note in 2003 was having our dear dog Cleo put to sleep, she was 15 and much enjoyed her last 3 years wallowing in the Autignac sunshine.. Early 2004 saw more changes, Ev, Jane's mum's, apartment she/we had constructed at the side of our house, was finally completed; this, following many headaches, problems and delays.. It is now available for her and family holidays and also for renting.. In January we acquired Maddie a French gun dog who was found with 2 broken legs in a very sad state - adorable, but following her traumatic life is terrified of thunder and gun shots so sleeps in the wardrobe!! When she hears these noises!.. Summer 2005 our pension en famille continued to thrive with us making more worldwide friends and acquaintances.. The weather was typical of the region with (yes some!) rain, pleasant and more predictable temperatures for the season.. Delightful Autumn too with us having lunch on the terrace most days, clear blue skies and no rain, early October followed by a week of torrential rain, unpredictable even here!.. Ron keeps busy with gardening projects and some swimming pool maintenance, of course free access to the pools as a bonus! Enquiries keep coming for further work too.. We have made so many new friends and shared numerous memorable soirees with good company, wine and food, not to mention the four day Autignac fete held in July, music/entertainment commences at 10.. 30 p.. m normally finishing at 4,30 a.. m.. and culminates in a grand meal for around 400 people in the centre of the village on Bastille Day.. We would indeed find it difficult to return to our previous way of life… in conclusion, 5 years on, life is good and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have discovered Autignac, it's people and our new lifestyle..

  • Title: La Charrue: Accommodation - Bed & Breakfast - Chambre d'hôte - Autignac, France
Descriptive info: General Information.. Bird Sightings Database.. General Information on Bird Watching in the area.. There is a large number of bird species in and around the village of Autignac - for list of what we've seen so far take a look at our.. database.. This list can, of course, be easily increased by visiting some of the surrounding areas: -.. The Regional Parc de Haut-Languedoc, the southern boundary of which lies to the north of Autignac, holds exciting species such as golden eagle (said to be 4 pairs), Bonelli's eagle (5 pairs in the Herault), booted eagle, peregrine, honey buzzard, goshawk, alpine swift, red-rumped swallow, wryneck, bonelli's warbler, hawfinch, ortolan bunting etc.. Eagle owls are not uncommon, but there are pairs nearer to Autignac and more accessible.. There are several sites where wallcreepers regularly winter, such as Minerve, but, again, this delightful species can be found nearer to our village.. Minerve also holds regular wintering alpine accentor.. The coastal marshes are superb, especially during passage periods.. Huge numbers of honey buzzards pass through twice a year and LPO have a local centre at Gruissan, near Narbonne, which gives some of the best viewing opportunities.. The lighthouse site at Cap  ...   other mountain species and for specialist species of the limestone causes, such as rock thrush and ortolan bunting.. The Carmargue and hinterlands, less than 2 hours away, is, of course, internationally famous and well worth considering for a winter visit, for species such as wallcreeper, Bonelli's eagle and eagle owl.. Wintering raptors now regularly include spotted eagle and long-legged buzzard.. The Pyrenees, about 2 hours from us, are equally well known for all the mountain specialties.. The superb wetland reserve at Auguemolls in north-east Spain can be reached in about two-and-a-quarter hours and so is easily do-able in a day.. Other exciting species breed in the Languedoc and I now have local sites for breeding little bustard (65 males counted by LPO in 2007, with stone curlews at the same site), Bonelli's eagle, lesser kestrel (53 pairs in one local village in 2007, a quarter of the French breeding population!), lesser grey shrike, red-rumped swallow, ortolan bunting, etc, as well as the eagle owls mentioned above.. • Title: La Charrue: Accommodation - Bed & Breakfast - Chambre d'hôte - Autignac, France
Descriptive info: Directions from nearby airports.. From Beziers/Cap d'Agde.. From Carcassonne.. From Perpignan.. From Nimes Montpellier.. Directions from Beziers/Cap d'Agde Airport.. Follow the exit road, over the railway bridge, to the main Beziers - Cap d'Agde road, where you turn right towards Beziers.. Continue for perhaps 10km, passing, on your left, the Canal du Midi and then on your right, an Ed supermarket and a garden centre.. Immediately after the garden centre, avoid the traffic island ahead by taking the slip road off to the right, following the green Beziers Centre sign.. You will pass a Bricoman store immediately on your left and then pass under a railway bridge, where the short dual carriageway becomes single-file and you are likely to hit a traffic jam!.. Proceed through a set of traffic lights, then passing the autoroute sortie 35 complex and then a Geant shopping centre on your left, after which you approach a large traffic island.. Stick to the right-hand lane and take the 2nd exit from the island, looking to follow the local signs to Bedarieux/Roujan.. Proceed for less than 2km, down a ramp to the next island, where you again take the 2nd exit, still following Bedarieux/Roujan signs.. Proceed for another 2km or so, looking to exit off to the right, again following the Bedarieux/Roujan sign.. This slip road leads up a ramp to another island, where you take the first exit, onto the D909, still signposted Bedarieux/Roujan.. Proceed on the D909 for approximately 15 kilometres to Autignac, passing Magalas after approx.. 12 kilometres (Intermarche store on the left as you pass) and then look for filter to turn left to Autignac (approximately 3 kilometres after Magalas).. Follow Autignac signs to the village.. Turn left at the first T-junction as you approach the village, with a wine co-operative in front of you.. Proceed for approximately 400 metres towards village centre, looking for small right hand turn signposted Lentheric/St Nazaire on the wall as you turn.. Turning is called Rue de la Paix and the entrance is very narrow.. Proceed for approximately 150 metres, to T-junction.. Turn left and immediately right into Rue Frederic Mistral.. Proceed for 100 metres and where the road spilts, bear left to the bottom, where there is a T-junction into Chemin de St Nazaire.. Turn left down a steep bank for only approximately 20 metres.. The entrance to our property, number 5, is via a lane between two houses, with gates at the end (approx 60 metres).. Number 3 is next door (there is no number 4).. If you should go wrong and get lost, please phone us on 04 67 09 37 06 and we will come and rescue you, if necessary!.. Please let us know, if possible, if your ETA is later then planned, due to flight delays, etc.. Directions from Carcassonne Airport.. There are various ways to reach us if arriving at Carcassonne.. The following is as direct as possible, is pretty and cross country but some of the roads from the Capestang turnoff are narrow in places and should be negotiated with a degree of care! Total distance from the airport to our house is 95 kilometres by this route.. For alternatives and for information on the region generally, try the website.. (see below for an alternative route using the autoroute system).. It is advisable to avoid the working city of Carcassonne, especially in rush hours and this is easily done by joining the A61 autoroute for one junction, in an easterly direction,.. From the airport, you have to turn right onto the main road, 200 metres to a traffic island, right round this and back the way you came, past the airport and  ...   aproach a T junction, where you turn left onto the D19 towards Murviel village.. In the village, follow the toutes directions sign then the D16 sign to St.. Genies de F.. In St Genies, follow the D16 sign to Autignac.. Proceed for 100 metres and where the road splits, bear left to the bottom, where there is a T-junction into Chemin de St Nazaire.. Turn left down a steep bank for only approx 20 metres.. Look for a pink wall on your right, half way down the bank, and turn right just before this, into a gravel drive - the gates to our property are about 60 metres down the end of the drive.. For those preferring to travel by autoroute as much as possible, join the A61 as above, east to Narbonne and then the A9 north to Montpellier, exiting at junction 36 Beziers Oest (west).. Please then refer to the directions from Perpignan airport, for the rest of the journey to Autignac.. Directions from Perpignan Airport.. The easiest way is via the A9 autoroute, access at junction 41 from the airport, exiting at junction 36 Beziers Oest (west).. The motorway is easily found following the blue autoroute signs to Narbonne/Montpellier.. Pick up a toll ticket on joining the motorway, pay on exit.. For the more adventurous, you can travel up the coast by way of the public roads through the etangs, which is very pretty, but you will need a decent map.. When exiting the autoroute, go straight over the immediate traffic island, following the Beziers signs and continue for about 6km to the next island.. Take the 2nd exit from this island, following the green sign to Montpellier.. Continue on this new road, which by-passes Beziers, for perhaps 10km, looking for a slip road off to the right marked Bedarieux/Roujan.. Take this and turn left at the T-junction onto the D909 and straight across the immediate traffic island, heading towards Bedarieux.. Please refer to Directions from Beziers/Cap d'Agde Airport for the remainder of the journey to Autignac.. Directions from Nimes Montpellier Airports.. The journey to Autignac from both airports is most easily accomplished via the southbound A9 autoroute, being fairly straightforward, if somewhat boring in both cases!.. From Nimes airport, join the A54 autoroute initially, following the northbound directions to Nimes, to join the A9 southbound (signposted Narbonne/Barcelona) at junction 25.. Keep on the A9 until junction 35, Beziers Est, where exit - see the Montpellier directions below for what to look for immediately on exiting the autoroute.. Then, refer to Directions from Beziers/Cap d'Agde Airport for the rest of the journey to Autignac.. From Montpellier airport, initially follow the toutes directions signs to a traffic island, where you will pick up the first blue autoroute sign, which follow onto a dual carriageway towards Montpellier.. Look to exit this at the 2nd of the A9 exits (the first is the northbound route to Nimes), signposted A9 Narbonne/Barcelona, joining the A9 at junction 29.. As for the directions from Nimes, take the A9 to junction 35.. On leaving the autoroute and, after paying the toll, stick to the right hand lane, following the green Beziers Centre sign (otherwise, you will end up on the A75, heading north again!).. This will lead you to a traffic island - take the first exit off this, still following the green BeziersCentre sign, up a ramp and filter onto the main road which runs round the north side of Beziers.. You will quickly pass a Geant shopping complex on your left and then approach a large traffic island.. Please then refer to the Directions from Beziers/Capd'Agde Airport for the rest of the journey to Autignac..
