  • Title: Nha Trang Roadtrip with the Dalat Easy Riders: Part 1 | Vietnam | Backpacking Southeast Asia
Descriptive info: Waterfall near Dalat.. The Dalat Easy Riders had been given glowing reviews by friends and fellow backpackers so we had already planned to at least take a 1-day tour of Dalat prior to our arrival in the town.. One thing that is definitely true about these guys is that you will not have to go looking for them, they will find you! So, although we did wander down to the Dalat Easy Rider Cafe to find out what they were all about, there were numerous drive-by attempts to sell us a tour whilst sauntering about the town.. We easily found the cafe (just look for the guys sporting distinctive blue/black jackets hanging around outside) and got chatting to Nghiep and Hong, two veteran Easy Riders who probably had the easiest sales pitch they have ever had to make.. Within minutes we were signed up for the 3-day tour to Nha Trang via the Central Highlands.. Day 1: Dalat and Surrounds.. Tree-topped hills in the Central Highlands.. We were greeted early at our guesthouse by Nghiep and Hong and having tied all our belongings to the back of each motorbike, we were soon on our way.. The morning was taken up by the sights around Dalat including Xuan  ...   the cool breeze rushing past our faces whilst looking out across endless rice paddies and tree-topped mountains from the back of our Honda motorbikes! Occasional stops were arranged to take in minority villages and to sample some of the potent rice wine and we arrived at our accommodation for the night just in time to see the sun set over Lak Lake, casting pink and purple reflections across the sky in what seemed to be the prefect end to an incredible day!.. Sunset over Lak Lake.. Dinner was followed by an obligatory shot-or-two of rice wine before we retired to rooms, heady with anticipation of what the Dalat Easy Riders would have in store for us the following day!.. • Title: Stranded in Ba Nahin | Laos | Backpacking Southeast Asia
Descriptive info: We had read about.. longest cave, Konglor, and added a few days onto our plans to detour through Ba Nahin to pay a visit.. Having settled on a guesthouse we made our way to the tourism office to assess our options.. Eventually, we settled on a basic tour which included return travel and guided boat tour through the cave.. Our trouble started when I opened my wallet to discover we had about $4.. This wouldn t have been a problem anywhere else, however, Ba Nahin does not have a bank with an ATM and does not accept Western credit cards.. Oh dear.. To add to our woes, it was a Saturday and the nearest town with an ATM was a 3 hour ride away, and the bank was not open until Monday.. The guys at the tourism office were unbelievably helpful, and were happy to take us to the.. on the Sunday and lend us the money to get to the nearest ATM if we promised to return and pay up on the Monday.. This was not he first time that the people of.. had shown themselves to be very friendly, helpful and trusting.. Boats moored outside Konglor Cave.. On the Sunday, one of the guys from the office turned up at our guesthouse with a letter which would allow us to complete the trip for free.. It was like being given a sick note to give to our teacher! I must say the note did not attract a great deal of sympathy from the locals at the cave who make their money charging foreigner taxes to rich backpackers , but after some stern looks and angry sounding dialogue we did eventually get access to the cave.. The cave itself was very long but it was fairly  ...   Hanoi and Halong Bay.. It is these kind of experiences that helped to make Laos our favourite country in this region.. May 15, 2012 at 12:10 pm.. Great story, I ve heard tales of the generous nature of the Laotians over the years and am really glad to see that it still exists.. Much of the region has a bad reputation for those looking to take advantage of visitors to the area, so it s refreshing to hear that there are some people in Lao maintaining the good name of their people, especially as i m heading there in a couple of months! Beautiful pics too, what sort of camera are you using and are you paranoid about lugging expensive tech about?.. Reply.. May 15, 2012 at 12:37 pm.. To be honest the camera I used was a cheap point-and-shoot that I had to buy in Mui Ne, Vietnam as I fell over and smashed my original one!.. I find it hard to believe that the region could have a bad reputation, as my experience in Laos was only ever positive.. In fact I found it to be a refreshing change from the aggressive and hostile hawkers of Vietnam.. Personally I wouldn t take anything with me that I wasn t prepared to lose or break having said that taking a good camera is well worth it and most people who have an expensive one normally carry it around with them wherever they go anyway..
