You can reach Capri by regular ferries (timed to depart in the morning and return in the afternoon) from Positano, Amalfi Town, Salerno and Sorrento.. Capri town offers shopping, people watching, Amacapri is more interesting with some nice historic buildings and continuing on the bus route you will find a nice beach area at the Faro.. Boat trips from Marina Grande can also take you around its coast.. Herculaneum Guide.. You can of course visit Herculaneum on an organised tour.. If however you prefer to travel independently then it is best to take the train from Sorrento.. You can (as with Pompeii) hire  ...   city and being smaller it can be a lot easier on your feet!.. Pompeii Guide.. If you have not been before Pompeii's sheer scale will surprise you.. Audio guides are available and a personal guide may be able to give you a more entertaining tour.. However plan what you want to see before; consider how long you will be there and what is realistic in the time.. Sorrento can offer a nice variation from the Amalfi coast, it has a more buzzy feeling, particularly in the evening.. There is a wider selection of restaurants and types of bar and plenty of shopping options.. Compared to Positano, in particular, costs can be considerably lower..

This means that.. during July August driving and parking in or near any of the main venues will be problematic.. However it has an excellent public transport infrastructure on land and by sea.. If you prefer to drive it is not as chaotic as its reputation suggests, there are just coach drivers who drive the road many times daily, keep your wits about you and give them space! Inland roads become far less problematic (the road to Ravello is of course entertaining but ultimately worth it.. If you  ...   in Positano, Ravello and Amalfi driving into the centre of the towns is limited to local residents.. Fortunately to get to Pompeii, Herculaneum and, if you wish, Naples you can.. use the excellent Circumvesuviana.. from Sorrento, the traffic from Sorrento to Naples can be chaotic and makes driving slow.. Amalfi Town has a surprisingly compact centre for a city which vied with Genoa and Pisa (before the growth and dominance of Venice) for maritime trade.. Disastrously an earthquake in 1343 led to a large part of the city literally slid into the sea.. If you arrive by boat or car your starting point is likely to be the marina area where there is parking a (in season crowded).. beach.. area.. Amalfi's maritime history is recorded throughout this area including a statue of.. Its set as a location for Italian films by Roberto Rosselini in the 40/50s, raised its prominence in the domestic market and it still holds an annual Rossellini film festival competition.. (not, despite the name Marina Grande) and you will see an array of original grand hotels on the clifftop above, from here there are regular buses (you can walk but it's a bit of a climb!) to.. Piazza Tasso.. the central piazza and main intersection.. It is named after the poet Torquato Tasso (1544-95) author of Jerusalem Delivered.. (La Gerusalemme liberata).. which describes the conflict between Muslims and Christians during the siege of Jerusalem at the end of the First Crusade.. A short walk north west is.. named after Sorrento's patron saint and where in the Basilica on the square his remains were entombed.. He is depicted standing on a sea creature; in respect of his miraculous saving  ...   cobbled road.. Marina Grande.. is despite its name more a small traditional fishing port around which restaurants and cafes have developed along its waterside and on jetties constructed into the harbour area.. Don't come here for its beach but it does offer good quality (and generally reasonably priced).. fish and seafood dishes.. in a quite relaxing environment.. Sorrento at Night.. Sant Antonino.. Piazza Tasso at Night.. A Shop A Chat?.. Plenty of Places to Eat.. At dusk Sorrento transforms and particularly around Piazza Tasso where traffic is limited and its restaurants and bars become venues for people watching as tourists and locals converge for an evening passegiata.. The narrow lanes of the adjoining old town likewise offers plenty of restaurants, bars and opportunities to shop or stop and have a chat.. Whilst there are bars that are obviously targeted at visiting foreigners it maintains a civilised feel and there is plenty of variety of places to eat or drink..
